What exercises would you suggest to bat better?
I’m playing softball this spring and I was wondering what kind of free weight exercises and exercises with the bat I could do to be able to bat better. Right now, I’m only lifting in the weight room and I’m only doing bench presses and curls… Any suggestions?
I do also run a lot for base running, and plus, I have to stay in shape for soccer.
It’s been a while since I have trained for baseball, but as far as hitting goes along with weight training I remember that we focused mostly on the small muscle groups with light free weights, working more on quickness than anything. You would also want to work on your legs that is where a large amount of your power is coming from. More than anything though as others have said get some quality time in the cage and work on building good habits with your swing.

Besides weight lifting and stuff,
you should really get some time in at the batting cages.
It really helps when it comes time for Spring.

You don’t hear a lot of people say this but it’s true: work on your wrists. Get the grips you squeeze for your wrists. You use a lot of your wrist in your swing and strong wrists will help.

Here are some solutions if you have these problems-
Slow reaction=put a weight on the bat when you’re in the "Hole"
Fast Reaction= remind yourself constantly to wait a while
Swinging Up= Don’t try to hit a high one it will most likely be caught so hit towards the ground
Swinging Down=Angle the bat a little higher when swinging

Hitting the ball is completley different from staying in shape to play baseball. In my eyes at least. I know that what helped me was when I was 5 years old, my father would sit me in a barstool with a drum stick and have me hit pinto beans. It helps your hand eye coordination a lot and the ball will look like a beachball. Also, when I got older, he would throw a colored baseball with 4 colors (red, green, blue and yellow) and I would have to name the color I hit.
I hope this helps!! Again, you need to better your hand – eye coordination
